As far as we can tell, while currently blinded, the time to onset of sedation has ranged anywhere from 6 minutes to just over 20 minutes. Patients who reached adequate sedation did not ever require "rescue" doses of additional ketamine to complete the laceration repairs, which were limited to simple lacerations less than 5 cm and did not require a consult service to perform the repair.   Recovery times have been comparable to patients who have received IV ketamine. Unfortunately, since we are still blinded at this time, we cannot make any further comments regarding a specific dose and its effect.

Patients receiving sedation dentistry treatments must be accompanied by a responsible driver/caregiver who will drive them home. After the appointment this individual should stay with the patient until the effects of the sedation have worn off. Selecting a Sedation Dentist Sedation dentistry treatments should be performed under the guidance of a dentist and staff specifically trained in sedation procedures. In the case of oral conscious sedation, for example, such training typically involves between 18 and 25 hours of education.

Patients under general anesthesia must undergo continuous physiological monitoring to ensure safety. In the US, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) have established minimum monitoring guidelines for patients receiving general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, or sedation. This includes electrocardiography (ECG), heart rate, blood pressure, inspired and expired gases, oxygen saturation of the blood (pulse oximetry), and temperature. [5] In the UK the Association of Anaesthetists (AAGBI) have set minimum monitoring guidelines for general and regional anesthesia. For minor surgery, this generally includes monitoring of heart rate , oxygen saturation , blood pressure , and inspired and expired concentrations for oxygen , carbon dioxide , and inhalational anesthetic agents. For more invasive surgery, monitoring may also include temperature, urine output, blood pressure, central venous pressure , pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary artery occlusion pressure , cardiac output , cerebral activity , and neuromuscular function. In addition, the operating room environment must be monitored for ambient temperature and humidity, as well as for accumulation of exhaled inhalational anesthetic agents, which might be deleterious to the health of operating room personnel. Most oral sedation medications are benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines work by increasing the effectiveness of your brain’s most common inhibitor, gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA makes your brain cells (neurons) fire less frequently. This means that there are fewer signals passing through the brain, and they pass more slowly and less reliably. It also makes it hard for your brain to make memories, so you’re unlikely to remember much about your treatment. What you do remember will be similar to the way you remember dreams: fragments and vague impressions.
